Heading Two

At the prompting of their mother, the Brinsmead boys applied for Dominion Land Grants in Western Canada. It was apparently her hope that they would each own their own land and this program of free land grants gave them means to do so. Percy was the first to apply, in 1913. He obtained title to the NE quarter of Section 24, Township 28, Range 2, West 4th Meridian. In 1915 he applied for and obtained a further half section; the NE and SE quarters of Section 30, Township 26, Range 7, West 4th Meridian. At couple of years later Percy's Uncle William applied for a similar grant, as did Thomas on behalf of his son David Horace who was away at war. William received title to the SW quarter of Section 3, Township 31, Range 2, West 4th, while Thomas received the SE quarter of Section 24, Township 28, Range 2, West 4th but only after David Horace had died.

Thomas and Matilda Brinsmead decided to move their family from Webbwood to Loverna, Saskatchewan in 1914. The family consisting of Thomas Junior, Horace, Bert and Isabel, arrived in the early summer of that year.

Thomas Sr. and Thomas Jr. built the premises which became the family home and the office of the Loverna Borderline Budget. Thomas Senior's brother Will operated a jewellery business from the same location, although later he moved to Consort, Alberta and Tom Senior's son Bert took over.
